For more than ten years, the non-profit arts and culture organization, Manifesto has hosted musical and cultural programming in Toronto, Canada, highlighting that city’s thriving creative scene through small events and a huge yearly festival.
The Manifesto family has branched out, and are now criss-crossing New York City, aligning with artists, organizations and creatives who share their desire to “educate, inspire, support and empower diverse communities of young people through arts and culture.”
To help kick-start these initiatives, Manifesto has orchestrated a weekend-long mix of programming that covers a wide swath of artistry, from music to spoken word and poetry, including some of the area’s standout hip-hop and genre-blending talent.
The four-day arc covers indoor and outdoor shows, including a collaboration with NYC’s SummerStage, for a Def Poets reunion show at Marcus Garvey Park on Sunday, August 20, produced by Danny Simmons.
Preceding this momentous event, the official launch party, featuring DJs Quiana Parks, GabSoul, LikWUiD and Dre Ngozi will set the tone for the world-influenced, New York-stylized blend of artistry to follow.
Keeping the various elements of hip-hop culture in mind, the Manifesto weekend continues on Saturday, August 19 with the Manifesto Throwdown, a dance choreography competition at the Manhattan Movement Arts Center, followed by a performance by Latasha Alcindor, an exciting, energetic and lyrical performer, at National Sawdust.
The programming is the first barrage in a planned, year-long effort to enlighten and entertain the New York masses while bringing together independent creatives throughout the region.
