Rennie Harris Puremovement is considered “the first and longest running hip-hop dance touring company,” and has been heralded for its creative, expressive works which “encompass the rich, diverse African-American traditions of the past, while simultaneously honoring the voice of a new generation.”
With an affinity for busting simplistic stereotypes about what “hip-hop dance” is often perceived as, Rennie Harris has expanded the artform, while ensuring the valuable, cultural DNA of the genre’s humble beginnings remain embedded in his choreography. The New York Times exalted a 2014 edition of the program, noting how “Mr. Harris shows his razor eye for threading virtuosic moves — the back flips, the aerials, the head spins, oh my! — into a tapestry of elegantly fluid popping and locking or simple walking patterns.”
Fans of music, dance, hip-hop and the fine arts will assuredly find themselves in collective delight as the latest incarnation of Rennis Harris: Puremovement slides into the Queens Theatre for three shows over two days, April 1 and 2, 2017.
