When Bronx spittress Remy Ma first cam home after serving a lengthy prison term, I spoke about the need for the hip-hop world to fall back with the “there can only be one!” undertones that were swirling at the time.
With Nicki Minaj sitting at the top of the overall rap game — and being a woman at that — many were expecting Remy Ma to make some sort of claim to the top female spot in rap. At the time, I pushed back against the idea that there was any need for this. That despite rap’s competitive nature, there didn’t need to be only ONE top woman MC in game.
Despite some initial good blood between the two, things have now gone the way of the diss record, as a couple of back and forth jabs between the two has resulted in an all-out assault by Remy Ma, over the classic shut-someone-down disstrumental of all time, “Ether.”
Minaj, it should be noted, is not as relevant on the music scene as she once was, whereas Remy is enjoying possibly the greatest success of her career. As such, perhaps her cockiness level was on 100 — or she’s been carefully stashing away a marble notebook full of punchlines for what seems like forEVER in preparation for this potential — and perhaps inevitable — clash.
And punch she did.
Big Punisher would be proud.
