The attention that New York’s hip-hop scene receives ebbs and flows. The genre itself is often too narrowly portrayed, with media tunnel vision often focused merely on radio rap or engaged in incessant gossipmongering. Yet, for the moment, the relative success of artists like Dave East, Young M.A. and the return of iconic New York groups like A Tribe Called Quest and The LOX have reminded the world that the state of New York’s hip-hop, is indeed strong.

The fact is, however, that New York is constantly providing much more than these fleeting moments of hyper-awareness might suggest. While other regions have risen up in the ranks of hip-hop hierarchy, no place on the planet possesses the diversity and progressiveness that New York City does.

One of the more exciting examples of the forward-thinking, artistic possibilities that our city can facilitate, has been the PitchBlak Brass Band.

PitchBlak Brass BandThis NOLA-flavored ensemble has not only released their own critically acclaimed, soulful merging of genres, but struck gold over the last year and a half by linking with some of the region’s most creative and charismatic lyricists and vocalists, creating unique, one-night-only performances that explode with funky music, flashy rhymes and energetic crowd interaction.

The PBB crew backed a variety of MCs and singers for their monthly PitchBlak Playlist, lending an exclusive musical vibe to each artist’s performance repertoire. Veteran independent artists such as Silent Knight, Rabbi Darkside and Soul Khan as well as buzzing upstarts like JSWISS, expertly and energetically re-imagined their music alongside the PitchBlak Brass Band.

The visibility of these joint ventures was amplified after a powerful collaboration between the PitchBlak Brass Band and veteran lyricist Pharoahe Monch, as part of the 2016 Ecstatic Music Festival, delivering a performance that at times both riveting and roof-raising as the “Simon Says” star performed his notable PTSD album in its entirety.

On December 18th, for one night only, a who’s who of renowned independent artists will re-join the PitchBlak Brass Band for the PitchBlak Playlist REWIND at le poisson rouge. With what will surely be an explosive night of musical frenzy, Silent Knight, Rabbi Darkside, Soul Khan and JSWISS will return, along with many other past collaborators including Mikal Amin (Hired Gun), Kalil Johnson, Guava, Clever Best, Nappy Nina, Blklyst, Mean Joe Scheme, Katiah, Eiffellife and soul-stirring crooners J.Hoard and Akie Bermiss.

This assortment of talent would be memorable on any given night, even more so with the infectious energy that the PitchBlak Brass Band brings to any event.

This will be the last of their collaborative events scheduled for the immediate future, so the PitchBlak Playlist REWIND is the perfect opportunity to enjoy this creative and intense musical experience.
