Juelz Santana, Jadakiss, Method Man & Redman Bring That Ol’ Thang Back

If "that ol' thang' is the New York hip-hop "sound," we don't think it ever really left. These veteran MCs combine to put an exclamation point on that theory.

If “that ol’ thang’ is the New York hip-hop “sound,” it really never left. Veteran artists have been continuing to make music through the years that hearken back to the Golden Age that New York is known for, and plenty of newer artists have found ways to inject their music with the same DNA, with modern flair.

Nevertheless, in the words of the pre-Yasiin Bey, mighty Mos Def, the “the hard headed always gotta feel it to believe it,” and sometimes it takes some big guns and a big record to put an exclamation point on the fact that that ‘ol’ thing’ is still alive and well.

To be fair, it doesn’t help when some of the genre’s older artists lament that New York’s “ol’ thang” is lacking — we feel it hurts a lot of artists who are making great music today — but the combination of veteran heavyhitters Jadakiss, Method Man, Redman and Juelz Santana take a more traditional “Eff all you wack MCs” role, lighting the Jahlil Beats-produced track on fire in the process, and that is just fine by us.
