On October 28th, as many in New York City kicked off Halloween-weekend festivities, Atlanta’s Cult Creative, comprised of lead producer Jabari Graham and lead curator Dwayne “Dubelyoo” Wright, offered something unique to the city.
Starting as an art show in Atlanta and now in its 11th year, the traveling Art, Beats + Lyrics event, presented by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, made its home at Terminal 5 as part of its mission to bring together the sometimes separate worlds of music and art.
The multi-faceted ABL event succeeded where many branded events fall short by transforming Terminal 5 into an exhilarating hybrid of one part large-scale concert, one part hip-hop art exhibit.
Beautiful hip-hop-inspired infused art from featured artists such as Dubelyoo, Matthew Curran, Miya Bailey, Frank Morrison, Diana Contreras, C FLUX SING, Jeremy Worst, Goldi Gold, Kat Goduco brought a unique vibrancy to the venue’s industrial aesthetic.
The evening’s soundtrack was eclectic, but rooted in hip-hop’s “Golden Age,” as Rich Medina, Wally Sparks, J Dirrt & The Werc Crew brought the accompanying party to life.
The night’s headliner — kept a secret and unveiled just days prior to the event — was the elusive hip-hop legend, Scarface. With a strong and engaging performance of classic material such as “Smile,” “Minds Playing Tricks On Me,” “Mr. Scarface Is Back” and “Never Seen A Man Cry,” Scarface brought the event concept home by embodying art, beats and lyrics in their purest form.
In the end, Cult Creative & Jack Daniel’s provided this near-capacity, eclectic New York City audience with a refreshing take on branded live entertainment with a creative, memorable approach to nostalgia.
