Simply put, Daniel “Majesty” Sanchez was a beloved fixture in New York’s independent hip-hop music scene. An artist-activist who worked tirelessly to improve the lives and careers of others, Majesty could be found on any given day holding down performance platforms for artists to cultivate their talent, or engaging with the community against the scourge of police brutality.

Known for his involvement with revered New York hip-hop events like Legendary Cyphers and End of the Weak, Majesty epitomized the soul of NYC’s hip-hop underground — progressive, forward-thinking and expansive, while remaining steeped in tradition and respect for the elements.

In a world where New York’s rap prominence is often mistakenly judged by whether or not an artist from the area happens to have a buzzing single or not, Majesty recognized that hip-hop lives very much in the hearts of the people of the city — not at a radio station, but in the parks, the small, intimate venues, the streets, the hearts and the minds of hip-hop’s extended community and those who admire and respect it.

Majesty, who worked to support victims of police brutality through organizations like the Justice Committee and Copwatch,  had recently moved to Las Vegas to continue to expand the reach of his work with these venerable New York institutions, as well as complete his full length project The Rebirth of Alchemy. He was also planning to continue his work fighting against human rights abuses through the power of music and community.

In a touching bit of irony, Majesty spoke to The NY Hip Hop Report after the death of another NYC indie powerhouse, Robert “PH Pumpkinhead” Diaz, who passed away in June, 2015, giving the late Brooklynite credit for launching his own career. [Starting at 1:07:00]

While the circumstances around Majesty’s death haven’t been made public, many who knew Majesty continue to mourn his loss.

A three-day long memorial celebration is planned for November 4-6, 2016, with multiple events paying homage to Majesty through musical tribute and gatherings of friends, family and fans.
