Queens, New York holds a fabled place in hip-hop history. Home to many of the genre’s historically iconic performers, the Q-Borough remains mad thorough when it comes to brewing rap talent.
To celebrate Queens’ past, present and future role in hip-hop, the first annual Queens Hip Hop Festival will take place from Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25.
The brainchild of Ashley “Queen of Astoria” Dean, the festival will feature artist and DJ performances, a film screening, art shows and a ‘graffiti walk,’ showcasing Queens’ contributions to multiple aspects of hip-hop music and culture.
Iconic Queens rappers like Nas and A Tribe Called Quest will receive special focus during the festival. ‘Artist Relaxation,’ an art show to take place on Saturday, will visually highlight the impact of ATCQ, while the Sunday screening of Belly at the Museum of the Moving Image will present Queensbridge legend Nas in the role that expanded his repertoire past merely making music.
An opening party will kick off the weekend on Friday, featuring DJ Rob Swift and open mic ciphers throughout the night. The main concert event will be Saturday, with a concert event to be held at the Shillelagh Tavern, featuring artists including Wordsmiff, Conflik, Cake Man, MelSwimsGood and Jon Lewis. Rounding out the weekend at La Gloria, like-minded hip-hop fans and participants will participate in a day-long-brunch, DJ-driven celebration of the genre.
