Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor Way: NYC Street Renaming For Late Member of A Tribe Called Quest

Malik 'Phife Dawg' Taylor Way - NYC street renaming

Once again, New York City is stepping up in a big way to honor its hometown hip-hop heroes. According to Okayplayer, Mayor Bill de Blasio will be designating “Linden Blvd @192” in honor of Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor, the much-beloved, late member of iconic group A Tribe Called Quest.

Phife Dawg passed away earlier this year due to complications from his long-standing bout with diabetes.

The Queens intersection of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street is the epicenter of the neighborhood where ATCQ was first formed.

The street renaming follows other recent declarations by New York City and Mayor de Blasio in honor of hip-hop. In February 2016, the city officially denoted the block housing 1520 Sedgwick Ave. as “Hip-Hop Boulevard,” tribute to the fabled birthplace of hip-hop, the building where DJ Kool Herc and his sister Cindy Campbell first hosted parties that are now widely acknowledged as the unofficial flashpoint of the genre.

After a spirited campaign driven by friends, family and fans, the city also renamed a Park Slope corner in honor of Robert “PH” Diaz, known to some as Pumpkinhead. The underground Brooklyn veteran died in June, 2016 at the age of 39.

We’ll have more information on the renaming of Malik “Phife Dawg” Way as it becomes known.
