Hip Hop Retreat Week will host a series of performances, panel discussions and special events at various locations throughout New York City.
The aim, festival organizers state, is to provide an affordable entertainment and education-focused festival for indie artists and others involved in hip-hop, without the need to venture to out-of-state festivals such as A3C and the Revolt Music Festival.
Hip Hop Retreat Week kicks off Tuesday, August 9 with a film screening of The Haitian Polo Documentary. The part-festival, part-conference picks up starting Wednesday, August 10 with Youth Day events in Bushwick, an LGBT-friendly concert event and the beginning of a four-day long stretch of informative panels and workshops.
Editor’s note: Birthplace Magazine founding editor Manny Faces will be appearing on two panels, one discussing the relationship between hip-hop and law enforcement (Thursday, Aug. 11) and one discussing the state of New York City’s hip-hop landscape (Saturday, Aug. 13).
In addition to the panels and workshops, concerts and showcases will pepper the boroughs for the duration of the event, highlighting a wide array of upcoming artists. As with other festivals, all-access passes are available for the entire run of events.
