From the moment Eff Yoo’s latest full-length project begins, the Queens MC hits you with the vibe that will define the rest of the Rediculus-produced, 11-track album — invitingly soulful, honestly lyrical and rather smooth.
The Eff Word is, as Eff Yoo tells 7th Boro, “a reflection of me as a person. It’s not personal,” the Broken Crew affiliate clarifies, “I don’t talk about my family or anything, but each song reflects my different moods and personalities.”
Those personalities are enhanced by veteran Chicago-based producer Rediculus, whose beatsmithing smoothly blends with Eff Yoo’s vocals, no matter what the mood.
Eff Yoo represents a class of NYC rap artist that has continued to remain true to the region’s classic hip-hop characteristics, finding ways to remain rooted in tradition without sounding dated. His laid-back flow is easy on the ears, with enough playful cadence that the listener never senses monotony.
Rediculus, who has crafted soundscapes for many independent and underground artists, blends soul samples with minimalist synth and drum work in a way that perfectly compliments Eff Yoo’s flow. Clever integration of news clips, guitar solos and sourced material keep the audience connected with the recordings.
So. Once again, a New York artist proves that any indictment that accuses the Big Apple’s rap scene of being a Southern-influenced, Top-40 copycat syndrome are grossly overstated. The effort is here, the lyrical ability is apparent and the production is well-aligned with boom bap sensibilities. Fans of traditional New York rap should absolutely give The Eff Word a solid listen and will likely find an audible atmosphere that feels quite at home.
Eff Yoo previews The Eff Word at a listening party Thursday, April 14 at Avenida in New York City. The album is scheduled for an April 21 release, and can be pre-ordered on iTunes here.
