Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen is a yearly event that weaves together the worlds of hip hop music, culture and women’s issues in a family-friendly and community-centered event. The annual celebration, which focuses on celebrating the talent of woman and girls of color through hip hop, health and wellness and community building, will take place on Saturday, March 5 at the Hostos College Center for Arts and Culture in the Bronx.
Each year, talented women and girls deliver memorable and spirit-raising performances, ranging from spoken word artistry, hip-hop lyricism, dance and other art forms, while organizations distribute helpful and inspiring information alongside local vendors. The free, all-ages event routinely packs the house, leaving many attendees awed and galvanized in their support for the performers as well as the vital issues the event calls attention to.
For this, the organization’s ninth year, the theme is “Universal Love,” a nod to the ongoing need for people and communities to share in positive experiences and achieve “total harmony.”
Each year, MHHK proves to be an entertainment-packed, kid-friendly event that serves as a model for how one local community can come together in the name of hip hop and provide a truly inspirational and educational celebration of arts and culture.
Hostos Center for Arts and Culture is at 450 Grand Concourse (at 149th Street), in the Bronx. Doors open at noon, with the performances beginning at 2:30 p.m. For those unable to make the event, Brooklyn-based community radio station Bondfire Radio will be live-streaming the event, complete with performances, artist interviews and more.
