Space, they say, is the final frontier. The mission, to boldly go where no man (or woman) has gone before. This is also the mission for some of the more creative members of our New York hip-hop community — to boldly deliver music unlike any who have come before them.
So, for this edition of “Connecting the New York Hip-Hop Dots,” our theme — is space. Here are three noteworthy releases from some of New York’s hometown hip-hop heroes that all revolve around the idea of creating extraterrestrial dopeness.
Kon Boogie – Spaceships
Kon Boogie has always been Above The Clouds and thoroughly about his business. Now, this Queens-based rapper/producer (who also is one hell of a graphic artist), focuses his renaissance-man qualities on his latest full-length project, Spaceships. Take a ride with Kon Boogie and his carefully-selected (and high-quality) featured guests aboard Galaxy Voyages (most notably, Tash from Tha Alkaholiks) travelling through multiple sonic galaxies, encountering many lyrical nebulae and creative quasars over the course of this inspiring 13-track voyage.
Kon Boogie – Spaceships (including his accompanying book!) available now. His album release party/concert is on March 25, 2016 at littlefield in Brooklyn. Facebook Event Page | Tickets
The Audible Doctor ft. Davenport Grimes – Incarcerated Stargazers
If we needed to connect the New York hip-hop dots more than just the spacey theme of this entry, we could make some connections between The Audible Doctor and Kon Boogie, as they joined forces on the remix to Silent Knight’s indie-favorite “Stayin’ Busy.” But the good Doctor should be familiar to east coast underground rap fanatics, if not for his spit game, certainly for his soulful tracks that have bring sprinkling throughout the rap universe for a few years, laying the foundation for tracks from his Brown Bag AllStars collective to Joell Ortiz and more. Here, The Audible Doctor recruits Davenport Grimes to rock out for his “Incarcerated Stargazers.” The track will appear on Doc’s upcoming EP #TheFallTape.
Flatbush Zombies – 3001: A Laced Odyssey
Taking our spaced-out theme to the maximum, the Flatbush Zombies continue with their intergalactically-eclectic mix of spacey vibes, smokey sounds and rugged rhymes that have made them princes of the new-New-York-slash-Beast-Coast movement. While you can (and should) cop their highly-anticipated and generally well-received debut album 3001: A Laced Odyssey over on iTunes, you can also get a somewhat-psychedelic taste of what they are working with, along with a clever nod to the movie (and associated album) that the Zombies’ title references with an audio/video mashup, courtesy of these folks.
