A section of Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx will be known as “Hip-Hop Boulevard,” according to News 12 Bronx, reporting that the New York City Council has approved a co-naming measure to honor the birth of the genre.
The measure includes the building at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. that is widely considered to be a landmark location in the history of hip-hop music and culture, where DJ Kool Herc and his sister Cindy Campbell once held a back-to-school party that many feel symbolically represents the birth of the genre.
In a statement to DNAInfo.com, Bronx councilwoman Vanessa Gibson affirmed her office’s dedication to highlighting the site and the genre, stating, “I’m thankful that it has evolved to a genre of music that has gained so much attention and popularity.”
The measure still needs the official approval from Mayor Bill de Blasio. He is expected to sign off on the measure.
