The PitchBlak Brass Band kicks off their monthly PitchBlak Playlist event series at Brooklyn’s Manhattan Inn on January 31, 2016. The first Playlist event of the year features the soulful, powerfully thoughtful stylings of rapper/producer duo, Bond St. District.
The PitchBlak Playlist series exists at a perfect time, one where the fusion of sounds and ideas is remarkably prevalent in hip-hop music and culture, amplifying the unique ability of hip-hop to deliver a wide spectrum of music with an equally expansive capacity for delivering complex emotions and thoughts. The PitchBlak Brass Band has been on the cutting edge of this movement for some time, as we discovered back in 2013 while covering the release of their You See Us project.

The band balances the fine line of progressive hip-hop that many fail at, sauntering perfectly between pitfalls of over-experimentation and generic fusion, keeping audiences impressed by their mastery of New Orleans-inspired musicianship and New York-based verbal acrobatics. Live shows are emphatically energetic, musically moving and verbally visceral, the type of performances that can be enjoyed by fans of all music.
The careful curation of their PitchBlak Playlist event series adds to the band’s reputation as forward thinking trendsetters, as the 2016 kickoff with Bond St. District demonstrates. The duo forge an impressive brand of hip-hop, with wordsmith DDm exuding barely-containable anger and concern over social issues over Paul Hutson beats that ooze with an equally urgent, carefully-controlled chaos.
The PitchBlak Playlist launches for 2016 at Manhattan Inn on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 8 p.m., and swings back the last Sunday of every month. The event series, presented by HYPNOCRAFT, is free for all.
