The Spinning Wheel, a multimedia performance engaging with the archive of Living Theatre alum steve ben israel, will be presented during a month-long gallery exhibition at Brooklyn’s BRIC House. The show and exhibition, created, curated and performed by Baba Israel, Yako 440 and Leo Kay, will run during January, 2016
steve ben israel was a musician, poet, comic and activist who left behind “a legacy of 1960s countercultural work and artifacts, an enormous archive, and a son — New York hip hop theatre artist, Baba Israel.” The younger Israel, along with his collaborators, have found an ingenious way to bring the elder Israel’s work back to life, through a mix of immersive design, multimedia integrations, and multiple disciplines, including spoken word poetry, hip-hop and jazz music and more.
Baba Israel and Yako 440 have history performing and touring together, with projects like their Highest Degree EP and their recent work as part of Soul Inscribed. With help from UK-based director Leo Kay, The Spinning Wheel includes various methods of storytelling, tribute and work inspired by the ‘radical’ archives of steve ben israel.
