Homeboy Sandman - Tour - New York concert - Knitting Factory

Hometown hip hop hero Homeboy Sandman to appear at Knitting Factory as current international tour swings through NYC

In hip hop coverage of late, there have been two prevailing camps. Thanks to the surge of nostalgic capitalization (see the influx of ‘classic’ themed rap radio stations and movies), there has been a plethora of media attention on hip hop’s good ‘ol days, even if some of it is revisionist history.

On the other hand, and often simultaneously, there is a deep distastefulness aimed at “today’s rap,” often by the same fans/media/talking heads who are deluded by nostalgia to believe that nothing created after [insert their favorite era here] is of any value to “real” rap listeners.

Well, just as he did when he helped continue to disprove the “New York hip hop is dead” idea (which somehow persists, even though it is pretty obvious, I argue, that the city remains the most diverse and progressive hip hop locale on the planet), Queens-representative Homeboy Sandman blows away any criticism that suggests that “today’s” rap music is less than stellar.

Boy Sand is not a complete aberration — there are many examples to counter this narrow-minded analysis — but for years he has been our go-to guy, and for damn good reason.

The Stones Throw artist has been on a steady touring schedule, and on September 3, New Yorkers who haven’t seen him in a while, and those who never have, but want to see if we’re right in our consistent praise, should venture out to the Knitting Factory to witness the man himself. Joining Homeboy Sandman are beatmakers/DJs, and frequent Sandman collaborators, 2 Hungry Bros., eclectic and energetic wordsmith Isaac Sawyer and Breeze Brewin’ from the mighty New York crew Juggaknots. The combination should properly demonstrate the magical hip hop uniqueness that New York can still conjure up.

The best part? We have tickets to give away!
