Lots going on in New York hip hop music and culture these days, from events spotlighting our communities iconic documentarians, new music from veteran MCs, new music from the next generation’s shining stars, as well as the unfortunate, violent death of Queens artist Chinx.
While we await the return of our weekly, call-in talk show, The NY Hip Hop Report, we wanted to drop a quick roundup of some of the things we’ve had floating around the lab.
Check it out below, and be sure to like and share these posts, so that these talented artists and important events get the attention they deserve.
El Da Sensei ft. DJ Devastate & J57 – Show Stoppa (J57 Remix)
Independent label Coalmine Records has been keeping the traditionalist New York hip hop sound alive and well for several years, dropping releases from veteran MCs and new jacks alike, coming together in most excellent fashion on 2014’s compilation release, Unearthed, mixed by the incomparable DJ Revolution. To celebrate the one year anniversary of that release, prolific Brown Bag AllStar producer J57 lends his remix chops to “Show Stoppa,” one of the album’s standout tracks by Artifacts vet El Da Sensei, featuring Sweden’s DJ Devastate. Catch Unearthed on iTunes or through FatBeats, and grab the “Green Slimes” cassette-tape release of Unearthed while supplies last! (FatBeats – UGHH)

Your Old Droog – Unlimited Metrocard
We were all into the Your Old Droog excitement, as the Coney Island MC rose to rap prominence off of the strength of a secretive release fueled by rumors of a Nasty Nas connection (to say the least). Well, after witnessing Droog’s much-hyped unveiling, we’ve continued to cast a curious stare in the direction of the wordsmith with the old soul. Here, he enlists the great Statik Selecktah fir “Unlimited Metrocard,” a short, non-alum tease to begin stirring up interest in Your Old Droog’s next full release, Lucky 7, due out July 7. In the meantime, catch Your Old Droog on tour in Europe.
Genesis Be – A Brownsville Tale
This talented Mississippi transplant won us over years ago, and Genesis Be continues to drop thoughtful, insightful, head-noddable music that we enjoy. Her latest, the smoothed-out story she calls “A Brownsville Tale,” keeps the trend alive. Check it out below, and keep an ear out for Genesis Be’s upcoming full-length release Poli Trap: The Escape Tape. If it’s anything like this track, we expect to be won over once again.

Hus Kingpin & SmooVth – Shooting Gods (ft. Killer Ben) Prod. Audible Doctor
You know how when you’re listening to something on Soundcloud and it ends and the next “recommended track” comes on and that shit sounds real grimy and stylish and you hear references to bagging chicks in Nordstroms and props to Hempstead, Long Island, and you switch back to Soundcloud and hope it’s recent so you can post it to the NY rap roundup and then on top of all that it’s produced by Audible Doctor, and then you do a quick search and see that Hus Kingpin also just dropped a remix of “Playoffs,” produced by Strong Island vet Roc Marciano, so you feel like you just gotta give the people a quick one, two from these cats? Yeah, that happened.

Nello Luchi – Cold World
Came across Nello Luchi recently, and we definitely bumped her LP The Struggle Before The Glory a few times in the lab. Interesting production, variety of styles and saying something, we’re looking forward to see what Nello comes with next., In the meantime, check out her video for the Bonafide Beatz-produced “Cold World,” directed by Celos Beats.
We Are The Inner Circle ft. Shaun Sutton, Reek Da Villian – I’m Lit
Lastly, for the bottle-popping crowd, DJ HD brings a joint we can see rocking lovely in a sexy, laid back private party or smoked out lounge out on Strong Island where these cats represent. Former Conglomerate member Reek Da Villian, out of Roosevelt, joins forces with Shaun Sutton, reppin’ Westbury, over a smooth, thumping Jazz Feezy & Scena-produced gem. Be sure to catch We Are The Inner Circle’s weekly event showcase The Earwaxx Sessions out in Amityville, found on the BirthplaceMag.com event calendar.
