Chelsea Reject drops musically and lyrically sharp CMPLX on Duck Down Music

Leading up to her release, Chelsea Reject started the Sister Nancy-influenced “Bam Bam” with, “Some of you know my name, but you don’t know me.” Well, if you’ve been halfway paying attention to the upcoming crop of young talent emerging from the New York hip hop scene, you might indeed have heard her name. And if you’ve heard one of the few gems she’s let go ahead of CMPLX, her 15-track project released through iconic indie label Duck Down Music, you probably want to know more about her and what she’s capable of.

CMPLX delivers. Over a variety of production contributed by folks like Kxngs, King Carlow and a slew of Pro Era friends coming along for the vocal ride, including CJ Fly, T’Nah Apex, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution and Dyemond Lewis, New York’s hip hop new school continues to demonstrate the ongoing staying power of the culture’s Mecca.

Chelsea Reject, repping St. Lucia and Brooklyn, likes to play with cadences and content, isn’t afraid of smoothed-out, jazzy instrumentals and opens up about her personal life with thoughtful wordplay and a subdued, but potent wittiness that is echoed throughout her social media presence. A bit complex, for sure, but not overly so.

Approachable. Listenable. Enjoyable.

In other words rap fans, even if you didn’t know her name or know much about Chelsea Reject, I’m pretty sure you will want to now.

CMPLX premiered over on HotNewHipHop and can be purchased it on iTunes.
