Jarren Benton at Santos Party House in NYC For Slow Motion Tour! Win Tickets!

Jarren Benton Santos Party House

Jarren Benton is one of those alternative rap artists that transcends cultures and boundaries, and now, the Decatur rapper is bringing his talents to the raucous Santos Party House in New York City! We’re also giving you a chance to win tickets to this exciting concert!

So, what is there to know about Jarren Benton, and why should you check him out?

Well, first of all, there’s his history with independent label Funk Volume, which, for a long time, established him as an artist that constantly “went against the grain.” Yet, as a solo artist, Benton wants it to be known that he has mainstream aspirations. “I love the music I do now. I do it in the safe mode,” he said. “I want to take it a lil’ further. I just haven’t had the balls to go all the way there yet, ‘cause I presently want to keep a foot in the mainstream too.”

Then there are his influences — unlike other rappers who claim to be influenced by a variety of other rappers and trappers, Benton counts the likes of Marilyn Manson and Prince as his influences (while, of course, name-checking the Wu-Tang god Method Man). He says that these artists give him the correct direction in regards to his live show, because they “don’t give a f*ck.” However, they also understand that there is a fine art to not giving a f*ck — that he has to combine a flawless delivery with a devil-may-care attitude — so that it doesn’t come off ironic or lazy. (Benton is nothing if not consistent with his live show.)

Then there’s the fact that he continues to remain loyal to the Atlanta community that gave rise to his stellar career. In addition to his loyalty to Funk Volume, he also maintains ties to the likes of Rittz, Playboy Tre, Spitzwell and his SMKA affiliates. “It’s the best of both worlds,” says Jarren, of playing a significant role in a respected collective of talent, as well as being an artist in one of the most powerful new labels in Hip Hop. “We all still came from that era about lyricism, even if you were making Southern music.”
