Hip hop superduo PRhyme (DJ Premier, Royce da 5′ 9″) descend on NYC’s Highline Ballroom, February 22
DJ Premier is one of those legendary DJs that personifies the foundation of hip hop. As one half of iconic MC/DJ duo Gang Starr (RIP Guru), Preem was responsible for producing a pantheon of hip hop greats as Jeru The Damaja, AZ, Big L, Big Daddy Kane, Bun B, Canibus, Common, D’Angelo, D.I.T.C., Fat Joe, Game, Jay-Z, Joey Bada$$, Kanye West, KRS-One, Lord Finesse, Ludacris, M.O.P., Mos Def, Nas, Papoose, Rakim, Sean Price, Snoop Dogg, The LOX, The Notorious B.I.G., Vinnie Paz, Ill Bill, Xzibit, and Busta Rhymes.
This Brooklyn-by-way-of-Texas legend also hosts a radio show, Live From HeadQCourterz, on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Hip-Hop Nation station every Friday.
Premo is a legend in his own right, though, he told XXL Magazine back in the day that he still pays tribute to some of the contemporaries, fellow New York hip hop legends — people such as Marley Marl, Jam Master Jay, Grandmaster Flash, and of course Afrika Bambaataa are all among his go-to list for inspiration. All in all, quite the hip hop resume, and quite the laurels to rest upon, should he want to retire and never work again.
So, what is he doing in PRhyme? The answer: a chance to collaborate with perhaps one of the most underrated MCs of our time, Detroit wordsmith Royce da 5’9″. The man makes up one-fourth of rap supergroup Slaughterhouse, is the only rapper that can put the fear of God in Eminem on the mic… and yet, somehow, remains largely unknown except to the most devout ‘heads.

For some reason, this combination of Detroit and Brooklyn provides a lethal mix that deserves to be sampled live… and the deadly duo is bringing their show to the Highline Ballroom (one of the last few bastions of live music left in NYC; unfortunately, the numbers are dwindling as the hipsters, greedy landlords, and gentrification take over the flavor), and for quite a reasonable price (tickets start at $20; VIP packages are a respectable $75).
Hopefully, this live performance will help make up for the fact that Preemo’s legendary studio, D&D, ceased to be operational last month. (Well, not completely, as DJ Premier is re-emerging in Queens-based Kaufman Astoria studios). He’s also working on the album, “Last Session @ 320,” in tribute to the studio that launched a thousand stars into the hip-hop stratosphere and has recently embarked on a live band project that we featured here on Birthplace Magazine as well.
For now, check these two hip hop heavyhitters at Highline Ballroom, on February 22. Purchase PRhyme here.
