Joey Badass, Action Bronson, Tanya Morgan, Coalmine Records & Phony PPL round out our daily roundup of New York hip hop goodness
Hello everyone!
Bernadette Giacomazzo here, and I’m the new executive editor for Birthplace Magazine. Amongst my other duties, each day I’ll be doing a post of our Top 5 — a roundup of news, reviews, interviews and releases that we think you should be aware of. So, without further ado, here’s the Birthplace Magazine New York Hip Hop Top 5 Roundup for January 22nd!

Coalmine Records – Remineded
This Brooklyn-based hip hop mainstay has amassed quite the catalogue over its years in existence, and this latest remix album promises to be a worthy addition to an already-vast collection that includes contributions from Large Professor and Pharoahe Monch to Big K.R.I.T. and Alchemist. This “new and old” retrospective features contributions from Royce Da 5’9″, Heltah Skeltah, and Sean Price. Stream a sample from the album below, and head over to iTunes to cop the whole project.
Phony PPL – Yesterday’s Tomorrow
Brooklyn continues to hold it down in today’s roundup, and this time it’s funk-and-soul indie collective Phony PPL that takes the stage. Hot off the heels of their successful show at SOB’s, this fifteen-track offering proves to be a different — and dreamy! — type of hip hop than the usual grime-types that the City that Never Sleeps offers. Stream it exclusively on DJ Booth and purchase on iTunes.

PICK OF THE PICKS: Tanya Morgan – 12 Minutes at Karriem’s freeEP
This is perhaps my favorite offering for today’s Top 5. Once again, Brooklyn is represented as Tanya Morgan (Donwill and Von Pea) snatched some beats from Karriem Riggin’s “Alone Together” LP, tossed it over to Miami-based HiPNOTT Records, and gave us this quick and easy audible treat. As with most Tanya Morgan projects, it certainly leaves us wanting more! Take a listen below.

Joey Bada$$ on Sway in the Morning
More Brooklyn strong today (are we noticing a theme?), this time courtesy of Pro Era founder Joey Bada$$, who just dropped his debut studio album “B4.DA.$$” two days ago. Never one to shy away from voicing his strong opinions (and really, what Brooklynite — REAL Brooklynite, not neo-hipster-douchebag Brooklynite — isn’t full of strong opinions?), he took himself to Sway in the Morning, where he discussed the Malia Obama “situation” (the girl wore a shirt! O NOES!) and had a few choice words for the critics who call him an “anti-white Marxist.”

Action Bronson on The Breakfast Club
Part of what makes Brooklyn’s own Action Bronson so amazing is his lack of ability to give a f*ck (and if he happened to have a f*ck to give, he wouldn’t give it to you). He is equal parts grimy hip hop and WWE super-villain, and — most of all — he’s really f*cking funny. Action took his unique bag of crazy to the nationally syndicated The Breakfast Club morning show, and the results were… interesting.
