Still mourning the untimely death of his cousin and tour manager, Joey Bada$$ unleashes the video for the Statik Selektah-produced “No. 99,” a high-energy hype-builder setting the stage for Joey’s upcoming, highly-anticipated album B4DA$$.
Directed by Rik Cordero, the video merges faux news stories with chaotic footage and cinematography that matches Statik’s “Scenario”-reminiscent production, a mix of a rumbling basslines and breakbeat-styled drum action.
As we reported on the December 7 episode of The NY Hip Hop Report, Joey Badass’s cousin Junior B was killed in an auto accident while out of tour with Joey Badass. The tragedy is the second to befall the popular Pro Era crew in as many years, as they approach the two year anniversary of the suicide death of Capital Steez, a much-loved member of the young, Brooklyn-based rap collective.
In response to the event, Joey Badass has canceled the remainder of his European tour.
Released just days after the loss, the video for “No. 99” makes brief, solemn mention of the incident at the conclusion, with the message:
Thank you for blessing us with your heavenly gift and may your soul rest in peace. To my big cuz Junior. – Joey Bada$$
According to Duck Down Music representative James Niche, B4DA$$ will be released on schedule in January, 2015. (Duck Down’s management arm works in partnership with Joey Badass.)
