The well-deserved hype surrounding Run The Jewels, last year’s slightly unexpected but awesomely successful collaboration between vets Killer Mike and El-P, continues.
The Run The Jewels duo follows up their self-titled debut with the pretty much self-titled followup, Run The Jewels 2, one of the more highly anticipated sequels in recent memory. “Blockbuster Night Part 1,” the lead single from the project, is a throbbing, neck-snapper worthy of kicking off the project. The Trevor Kane-directed video matches the barely-controlled chaos of the verbal delivery nicely. It’s a good song. It’s a good video. It’s a good album. Win. Win. Win.
So. If you’ve been hearing the hype, particularly if you’re the type to whine about the 1) lack of creativity in hip hop (looking at you Kid Cudi), 2) bullshit on the radio, 3) lack of “real” hip hop, or all the other lame excuses for not actually seeking and evangelizing good, current hip hop music, Run The Jewels 2 is for you.
But if you’re still not sure what to do because it’s not on your local mainstream radio dial (sigh):
- Watch the video;
- Smile as a sense of nostalgia mixed with discovery washes over your hip hop audio taste buds;
- Stare transfixed at the video, absorbing the sonic delight, and fell shocked as a feeling travels through your spine… It’s a long lost feeling. It is the feeling of wanting to tell someone, “Oh shit! Listen to this cool shit I just found!”;
- Click the link below, as that other long-lost feeling comes back to you. The feeling of actually wanting to BUY MUSIC.
This way, they won’t have to run your jewels. Again, a win-win.
Run The Jewels 2 can be purchased on iTunes here. Run The Jewels will be touring, and hitting NYC in late November.
