Nicki Minaj, the most polarizing figure in history since Santa Claus (get it?) is set to claim/reclaim her rapstress throne with the release of her upcoming album PinkPrint, and despite the recent controversy over the Nazism in her “Only” video, and the fact that most people who hate “Anaconda” seem to somehow be ignoring the just-as-much-cheese factor of the original, Nicki Minaj, as she often does, shows flashes of goodness mixed in with her quirky decisions.
“Bed of Lies” is such an example. It’s pop-friendly, but make no mistake, it’s a rap song. One which finds the Queens-bred Minaj touching on perhaps-recent developments in her personal life, and definitely not looking at them through pink-colored glasses.
Say what you will (and you will) about Nicki Minaj, but I have often defended her skill, and her ability to define a lane (several, in fact), ride those lanes and own those lanes. While some of her musical and marketing choices have baffled even her most ardent supporters, I will continue to stick by my opinion that Ms. Minaj is one of the more creative artists of our day, certainly a fearless risktaker, a badass “rockstar” and a highly competent lyricist.
When she wants to be.
I was hopeful, but disappointed at the overall range and quality of her Pink Friday effort, but I remain optimistically hopeful that she will redeem whatever missteps she made in the past, and give me a reason to say “A ha! See! I TOLD YOU!”
Come on Nicki. Do it for me. Do it for Birthplace Magazine! Do it for America!
In the meantime, here’s a song that reminds us she’s a woman. Not a doll. Not a figurine. But a real, live human. What a novel thought!
Those who have the pre-conceived notion that everything she touches is shit, move along. We’ll have other stuff you’ll like I’m sure. As for me, I’m here for you Nick.
