DJ Mister Cee, the long-standing midday spinner for iconic New York rap radio station Hot 97, has resigned. Again.
The news came out via an Instagram post by Hot 97 flagship DJ, Funkmaster Flex. The message, which came out midday Friday, November 21, announced the news abruptly. “Resignation Alert!!! Today will be @djmistercee last day on @hot97!!! Tune in and wish him well!!!!” Mister Cee will be resigning from the station for the second time in as many years, as a public, controversial run-in with the law nearly drove him from Hot 97 back in 2013.
The incident was not the first time that the DJ found himself on the wrong side of the law, for a similar circumstances. It culminated in a personal, widely listened to, on air interview with Ebro Darden. The response was polarizing, as many felt the matter should have remained personal, and that Hot 97 was using its influence to cash in on the drama, for a bit a “good radio.” However, Mister Cee reversed his decision at the time, and remained with Hot 97.
DJ Mister Cee, a veteran in the music industry, was first known as the DJ for Brooklyn’s Big Daddy Kane. Mister Cee is also credited with helping to discover and launch the career of The Notorious B.I.G. On air, he is best known for his midday throwback mixes, and has become recognized for his tribute mixes, honoring fallen artists.
Mister Cee acknowledged the resignation with an Instagram image, showing an empty area in the corner of Hot 97’s studio, stating, “So Every Friday After I Would Go Off The Air @ 1pm I Would Stay @hot97 & Prepare 4 My Friday Nite Live Show. I Would Sit In This Corner Of The Studio All Day On Fri. Somebody Just Sent Me A Pic Showing Me Respect By Not Sitting In Corner 2Day. YALL CATS AT HOT 97 IS MAKING ME FEEL LIKE DEREK JETER 2DAY!!! THANK U. LOVE U ALL.”
It is not clear weather DJ Mr C has any other radio plans in his future. He is often found DJing at clubs and events throughout New York City, and plans to continue, as he stated in a subsequent Instagram post, “Ok people I left a radio station but I’m not dead!!!!! Back 2 the action!!!! My club line up coming up!!!!!”
