Brooklyn’s Innocent? and Queens’ Nutso combine on the Cool FD-produced “On My NY Sh*t,” elevating the smooth Big Apple banger with a colorful hometown-heavy visual treatment, courtesy of director Donald Robinson Cole III.
We have a confession to make.
Even though no hip hop media outlet has championed New York’s continuing hip hop greatness more than us, we secretly cringe whenever we hear a song or album that so gratuitously references the birthplace of hip hop, as in some cases, the result has been.. shall we say… less than fitting the magnificence of the subject.
However, we didn’t really expect that to be the case where Innocent? was concerned, as the Brooklyn wordsmith has delivered consistently solid material in the past. Neither would we expect anything less than worthy from Nutso’s guest appearance, as he has always been another highly respectable representative of the classic New York sound.
So as suspected, the smooth sample, soulful bassline, classic headnodding vibe of the track, and corresponding video effects that worked well without being overbearing, produce a collaboration well-aligned with the greatness of the city the song represents.
“On My NY Sh*t” appears on the T.H.E.M. Recording compilation, Killin’ the Game.
