Buddy Esquire, known as the “The Flyer King,” who designed many of the now-iconic party flyers from hip hop’s infancy, has reportedly passed away at the age of 55.
Esquire was a Bronx resident who, according to Complex, designed “300 flyers between 1978 and 1984,” many featuring legendary figures in hip hop music and culture, including Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow and many others. His design sense became synonymous with the “look” of the era, and his work has been cataloged at the Cornell Hip Hop Archive, and will be featured in a monograph project, due out this summer.
