On the 14th anniversary of the death of Big Pun, his son Chris Rivers laces his late father’s ‘Beware’ with his own freestyle over the classic track.
The aspiring MC has always possessed a flow highly influenced by Big Pun, and his work on “Beware” is no different. The two-verse offering references his hip hop lineage while the young MC rattles off wordplay over the beat with a style that absolutely hearkens back to Pun.
Big Pun, born Christopher Lee Rios died in 2000 at a Westchester hotel, succumbing to a heart attack and cardiac failure. The rap titan struggled with weight issues, and weighed nearly 700 pounds at the time of his death.
Chris Rivers, who is pursuing a career as a rap artist, released a mixtape in 2013 entitled Wonderland of Misery.
Known as ‘Baby Pun’ in the past, Rivers has acknowledged changing his stage name had to do with establishing his own identity, as he explained in 2013 to Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg, “I get proud when people tell me I’m like my father, but his good side. Cause he had two sides. There’s one side that nobody really knew. So, I get proud when people tell me that, but when people call me Baby Pun I don’t really want it cause it’s like I don’t wanna be like my father at all. I wanna be a better man than him or take all his good qualities and amplify it. I don’t wanna be that man and I’m not that man.”
