LeRoy McCarthy has led efforts to persuade New York City to honor some of hip hop music and culture’s most revered figures, including the late Jam Master Jay, Biggie Smalls and the Beastie Boys.
He is currently facing opposition to his attempts at requesting an intersection in the Lower East Side be named after the Beasties. The intersection was shot for the cover art of their album Paul’s Boutique, and, McCarthy argues, the Beastie Boys were integral members of the New York arts and music scene.
On the January 19 episode of weekly talk radio show The NY Hip Hop Report, McCarthy spoke on his efforts, and why he feels hip hop artists should be honored in this manner.
“It’s only appropriate that they should have some type of tribute, honor for these artists who have contributed so much to New York,” McCarthy stated. “In my opinion, hip hop has done more mentions and shoutouts for New York City than the New York Tourist Board.”
McCarthy is currently working to collect the necessary paperwork to re-submit the Beastie Boys Square request. We will update readers as to his progress.
