Tanya Morgan was one of the inspirations for starting up Birthplace Magazine.
When I was poking my head around the New York hip hop scene a few years ago, looking to see if there were indeed music, artists and events that were being ignored by the void in NY-area hip hop coverage, one of the earliest indications that proved that there was, was catching Tanya Morgan at a show.
While the group dynamic has changed slightly, the progressive-but-not-too-experimental vibe, with a clear reverence for the music and cultural spirit guides that have come before them, continues to manifest, particularly in jazzy jams with thoughtful dialog, like “Eulogy.”
That sonic foundation, provided by 6th Sense, himself a production mastermind (who I also met on the aforementioned night), as well as an artistic, Joey Angerone-orchestrated video, demonstrates the long-bubbling greatness of New York hip hop that inspired me, as well as the legions of Tanya Morgan fans.
