Soul Khan is ‘Praying For a River’ With First Release From Upcoming Album

Soul Khan - Praying For a River

One of our favorite punchline pugilists, Soul Khan, is back from a bit of a new-music-hiatus, dropping “Praying For a River,” his first new song in almost a year.

The former battle rap veteran and his Brown Bag AllStars brethren have dropped memorable material in the past couple few years, both individually and collectively, gaining attention and opportunity from the industry and a steadily increasing fanbase.

The streak continues here, with BBAS’ J57’s hypnotically smooth musical foundation underneath “Praying For A River,” as Soul Khan spits the type of observational, intellectual, witty lyrics that have become his trademark. Though his voice has always been one of the heartiest of the modern rap era, Soul Khan actually seems to have a bit of a gruffer, more confident twang on “Praying.” We wonder if all this is a taste of how “Soul done changed…”

We’ll definitely be checking for what Soul Khan is bringing to the 2014 table, as here, we dug the sound, the flow and the messaging, a trifecta that we’ve heard from SK several times before.

To be honest, we expect to hear several more.

“Praying For A River” is from Soul Khan’s upcoming free album, due out in 2014.
