Maino and Jadakiss ask “what happened” to New York hip hop.
They have a few good points, but if you ask us, lots happened — just not all the things they, or many other people, think happened. The problem is, everyone keeps preaching doomsday for New York hip hop. It actually does a HUGE disservice to the thriving, complex, varied and progressive scene that we see all the time.
We even have a magazine and a radio show dedicated to it, with plenty of readers and listeners that would lead us to believe we’re right.
Yes, they bring up some “general” hip hop issues, but their points are cliche, and it is a bit disappointing when we hear our own discounting our scene, especially when we know there’s way more to it than what they’re discussing here.
In either case, it’s way too complex an issue to sum up in a few paragraphs, soundbites or a couple of verses, but it is interesting to get the perspective of two actual journeymen in the game.
