Lauryn Hill is free. Long live Lauryn Hill.
As Ms. Hill was being released from prison after serving a three month sentence, “Consumerism” quickly spread throughout the internet, showcasing an energetic Hill serving up a blustering verbal attack on some of the world’s evils.
Lauryn Hill, who had to started her sentence on July 8, 2013, after it was determined she failed to pay taxes, stated “Consumerism” was material she was working on prior to having to serve jail time, now taglined “Part I – Letters From Exile,” perhaps hinting to a full Letters From Exile project.
Details of such a project are not immediately clear, but hearing Lauryn Hill’s “Consumerism” is certainly a good sign, as the rapid-fire delivery, substantive lyrics and bouncy track all point to a reinvigorated Hill, who has faced acclaim and criticism in the years since the electric days of her prime.
We look forward to more from Lauryn Hill, especially if “Consumerism” is any sign as to the quality and styles that she plans to bring to the game.
