In an interview with HipHopDX, Brooklyn upstart Joey Badass bristles at the media continuing to try and “pigeonhole” his music style as strictly ’90s era hip hop.
During the discussion, interviewer Bruce Smith reiterated the oft-repeated description of the Badass/Pro Era “sound,” stating, “Everything is real turned up right now, but you’re not doing [120] beats per minute type joints.”
“Who said I’m not?” Joey Badass replied.
“I just listened to your show,” Smith replied, following up with, “That’s not your sound.”
Joey Badass, who had previously given brief answers to questions posed, replied in earnest, perhaps hinting at what may be becoming a thorny topic.
“What you’re saying here is, you’re one of those interviewers who continue to pigeonhole me into this ‘90s era box. What it really is, is that the more you guys do that, the more people turn away from it, ‘cause they just easily perceive it as that. This is fresh new music. From 2012, 2011, and now 2013.”
Joey Badass, riding the buzz of his acclaimed 1999 mixtape and Summer Knights full-length project, is working on his album B4 Da $$, due out in 2014.
