From the opening, Queens representative Kon Boogie lets you know what type of vibe he’s going for, as the 12-track Believe or Never Grow jumps off with with lyrical prowess, charismatic flow, tight production and crispy engineering. A mixture of introspective joints, displays of braggadocio and party-type jams, Believe or Never Grow is a well-rounded project, musically and lyrically, well worthy of eartime.
Kon Boogie has no shortage of material floating around, from his excellent Above The Clouds, to a slew of Jacking For Beats mixtapes, to the bouncy “About My Business,” he has stayed active in and around the city and the internet, building up his loyal fanbase while hitting stages large and small.
It’s little surprise then, that Kon Boogie manages to capture an overall vibe that well matches the status of the indieground NYC hip hop scene, with occasional injection of boom-bap DNA fused with melodic instrumentation and soulful sampling. The well-thought out playlist includes staple joints from every category, a few well-placed features and varied-but-never-too-experimental production that overall should satisfy many hip hop heads, regardless of individual taste.

Standouts include NYC dedication “Drifting,” a soulful sample-flip with smooth songbirding by Ashley Mischief, also featured on the hypnotic “Pass By,” and the thoughtful “Much About Nothing.” It’s on these types of songs that Kon Boogie makes his mark, demonstrating the difference between an artist simply looking to make dope songs and an artist who truly wants to connect with his audience.
If they believe, he’s bound to grow.
