Way back when we started this lil’ ol New York hip hop magazine site, when pretty much everyone in the world was saying things like “New York hip hop fell off,” and “New York rap sucks,” we said, “Hold up.” And we gave you “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck.”
One of those first five reasons was YC The Cynic. Long before hip hop and hipster music media caught on to a resurgence of New York, we noticed cats like YC, punctuating his intelligent and enunciation-filled flow with a knowledge, respect and a good ear for the throwback sound of the Golden Era.
It sounded refreshingly nostalgic. Reminiscent of the old, but full of the new. And we liked it.
Since YC’s breakthough debut You’re Welcome, the Bronx wordsmith has made his rounds, popping up on every NY-area stage that welcomed up and coming artists, and following up with highly respected follow up projects like Fall FWD.
Proof of his acclaim, his latest project, GNK, was funded by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, and has already yielded intriguing new sounds and attitude from YC. Showing artistic growth coupled with a willingness to experiment and get personal, GNK should indeed be a highly listenable project, from a lyrical point of view as well as musically, thanks to inventive production, held down entirely by Frank Drake.
YC The Cynic will be holding court at the album release party for GNK, to be held on August 26, 2013 at SOBs. Expected to perform are a stellar lineup of heralded independent New York City artists, including Soul Khan, Sene Brooklyn, ScienZe, OTiS CLaPP and Dao Jones.
Expect a few more surprises, and undoubtedly, a little help from show hosts Homeboy Sandman and Rebel Diaz. DJ Charlie Hustle is expected to hold down turntable duties.
Best of all, Birthplace Magazine has a ticket giveaway for the event! Simply fill out the form below and we’ll randomly pick a winner a couple days before the show.
