For years, we’ve been watching the ongoing evolution of one of our favorite young spitters, ever since we named him as one of our inaugural “5 Reasons Why NY Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck,” and now YC The Cynic has taken a sizable leap forward with “God Complex,” the first single from his Frank Drake-produced album GNK.
A smooth, breakbeat-infused, plingy track lays the perfect foundation for YC’s singsongy delivery, while the Oliver Eid-directed video complements the casual, borderline-trippy flow of the whole package.
It’s a great choice. Those who know, know YC can rip verses with clever wordplay and brilliant alliteration, skills that are only teased in “God Complex,” but the song is just cool enough, smooth enough and catchy enough to certainly gain him more attentive ears outside of his normal circle, setting them up for whatever else YC has up his sleeve.
Which, unless you’re overly cynical, you have to think is going to be pretty dope.
