Sort of famed music journalist Manny Faces returns to his artistic roots with the release of his self-described “unearthly smash” single “Interesting,” the debut and also only song from his just-released, one-track-long mixtape, the aptly titled “One Song Mixtape.”
The result of a drunken, hot Saturday afternoon cooped up in his home office, “One Song Mixtape” is a compilation of a track recorded in the very same home office, on the very same drunken, hot Saturday afternoon.
“Well, I had written the verses a couple of weeks ago,” Faces explained, “and I had so much work to do, but I was drinking and I knew that if I went outside I’d fall asleep in the grass. But I didn’t want to work anymore. It was a 22 Catch. A Catch 22. Sorry. I’m drunk. So BAM! Interesting.”
“Interesting” repurposes an instrumental track composed by producer JIM. Of the production, Manny says, “I haven’t written a song in years, but when I heard this track, something bit me on my insides and I internally bled hot verses until lyrical awesomeness oozed out of my pores and crevices.”
Crevices? Really?
“Yep. Crevices. It was crazy.”
Manny Faces spends the bulk of his time as a respected journalist and new media professional, founder and editor in chief of New York-based hip hop publication Birthplace Magazine, and host of its weekly online radio counterpart, The NY Hip Hop Report.
“Normally, I’m not drunk and music makey,” Faces explained between belches. “I rep New York hip hop, big names, underground, indie, events, organizations… Everyone. And I did it for years, when nobody in hip hop media gave New York its props. Now we’re hot again, and everyone’s surprised, but we’re like, ‘We been saying this!’ Anyway…”
Before Faces proceeded to tickle the ear of his cat, and drift off into incoherent speech and subsequent slumber, he urged the worldwide audience to listen to his new project.
“Whatever happens, know thishh,” he said, slurring. “Nobodys ever made like a one track mixtape. Ever. Only me. I am a PIONEER. A genilus. [He meant genius]. AND the song ish so awesome! Oh my Gid, like is so is. If YOU think it is awesome, or if you don’t think IT is awesome, fine. Just check out BirthplaceMag.com and NYHipHopReport.com because they are way more awesome. Awesomer. Awesomester…”
Manny Faces dedicates himself to telling the stories of hip hop’s music and culture in and around the New York area, when much of the hip hop media focuses solely on the mainstream glitz and glitter. He is currently hard at work crafting articles, covering shows and telling the stories others are ignoring.
“I apologize for interrupting the fine, journalistically-sound work I do at Birthplace Magazine with this,” he said, before screaming. “But I’m tipsy and CAN I JUST HAVE MY MID-LIFE CRISIS, I CAN’T AFFORD A CONVERTIBLE!”
Yes, for one drunken, hot Saturday afternoon, between posting songs, coordinating with writers, prepping for his radio show, contacting venues, and corresponding with publicists, Manny Faces decided he would show you motherfuckers that he still got it.
