Some liked how Brooklyn hip hop upstart Joey Bada$$ changed up his voice and flow in “95 Til Infinity,” some didn’t. Either way, the oG $wank-directed visuals are here, as the buzz around Bada$$’s upcoming debut, Summer Knights continues to grow.

For the unitiated, Joey Bada$$ began to make waves as a high schooler, particularly after the release of his highly-acclaimed mixtape 1999. In it, Joey Bada$$ raised eyebrows with a flow and music choice highly reminiscent of New York hip hop in the 1990s, of particular note when other prominent New York artists breaking ground were adopting flows and musical styles more aligned with a mainstream, national sound.

Bada$$, along with his collective, Pro Era, who collectively competantly collaborated on their own PEEP: The aPROcalypse mixtape, suffered a tragic loss with the suicide of group member Capital STEEZ. Despite this, Bada$$ has gone on to create an anticipation for his debut project, originally scheduled for a June, 2013 release, working with veterans such as DJ Premier and MF Doom.

95 Til Infinity” demonstrates a slightly more aggressive Joey, as opposed to a more laid-back flow on previous songs and releases. Whether his vocal change will be reflected in a wider variety of his material, or was just a one-off to show some sort of range remains to be seen.

Below is the Pitchfork-premiered video for “’95 Til Infinity.”
