The 20th edition of Hot 97’s Summer Jam will be headlined by some of the biggest names in hip hop and R&B, as usual, continuing the tradition of the radio station’s concert as the largest in the New York City area.
Following an earlier announcement highlighting the acts scheduled for the smaller, “festival” stage, Hot 97 announced the lineup for the main event. Summer Jam is a yearly concert that takes place at the MetLife Stadium in nearby Rutherford, NJ, and has made history in the past due to surprise appearances as well as soap opera-like drama. Jay-Z famously contributed both, one time surprising the crowd by bringing out Michael Jackson, another, infamously dissing Prodigy from the group Mobb Deep, by posting unflattering baby pictures on the screen, as part of an ongoing musical feud.
For 2013, Summer Jam will be celebrating 20 years, and is bringing to the stage some of today’s biggest rap and R&B stars.
Headlining the main show will be Compton’s man-of-the-hip-hop-hour Kendrick Lamar, as well as New York’s counterpart, A$AP Rocky. Festival journeyman Fabolous will appear, as will old-school icons, the Wu-Tang Clan. Also from the New York-area contingent, French Montana and Joe Budden, while 2 Chainz and Wale round out the hip hop portion of the main event.
On the R&B side, Chris Brown will return to Summer Jam, and smooth crooner Miguel will appear as well.
As in years past, fans can expect additional artists to be added to the bill as the date approaches, as well as surprise guests during the show.
Summer Jam is just one of the many hip hop concerts taking place in and around New York City during the summer, most notably, the free SummerStage Concert Series, organized by the City Parks Foundation. This year, the SummerStage series is heavy on hip hop, celebrating the 40 year history of the music and culture with a wide assortment of free park concert events.
Summer Jam XX will take place Sunday, June 2 at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, NJ. Tickets can be purchased here.
