Well, it’s taken them a few years, but it seems the more “mainstream” folks are finally catching on to what we’ve been predicting and advocating all along. New York hip hop didn’t need to make a comeback, the rest of the world just needed to catch up.
As further evidence, The New York Renaissance, a 17-track mixtape, presented by sometimes-underground-advocate Peter Rosenberg and Ecko Unltd., contains songs from many of the usual suspects currently enjoying a modern-day New York hip hop resurgent buzz, including A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson and Flatbush Zombies. Also thrown into the mix, NY journeymen like Smoke DZA and The Kid Daytona. Production is handled by a wide range of beatsmiths, including the man of the NY-hour, Harry Fraud.
Most interesting, and the best that the project does in reaching a bit out of the obvious box, is the inclusion of YC The Cynic and Homeboy Sandman, both entrants in BirthplaceMag’s inaugural “Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck.” We’re very excited to see that placement, as we have been vehemently touting YC and HS as prime examples of the dopeness in New York’s underground and indie scene for some time.
