On the eve of the third anniversary of the untimely passing of hip hop icon GURU, Marco Polo, Talib Kweli and DJ Premier pay tribute.
As I explained in my post following his death, GURU’s passing was the first hip hop-related death that I had a personal connection to, having met GURU during my brief internship at New York’s D&D Studios.
Over this soulful track, Talib Kweli eloquently eulogized GURU, describing their personal dealings, as well as describing the range GURU had in his music and lyrics. A fitting tribute from one lyricist to the next, with G.U.R.U.’s masterful Gang Starr colleague DJ Premier adding his deft touch with recognizable chorus cuts.
“G.U.R.U.” is a track from Marco Polo’s upcoming album PA2: The Director’s Cut, scheduled for a July 2013 release.
Rest in peace, GURU.
