Azealia Banks – BBD (New Music)

Azealia Banks - BBD - Bad Bitches Doit

Harlem’s Azealia Banks drops her first effort for 2013, a musically frantic, bass heavy stuttery-snare Apple Juice Kid/Sup Doodle-co-production titled “BBD.”

It’s a little harder, a little less sloppy and a little more promising than some of her previous efforts, many of which have drowned in sonic experimentation that, in some opinons (mine), haven’t done her any favors.

“BBD” (Bad Bitches Doit) sets the table for Broke With Expensive Taste, her debut (!) album, due out in February, 2013. I say (!) because it’s funny how much attention she (and others) have been able to garner in 2012 without actually having an album.

To be fair, her EPs and mixtapes, 1991 and Fantasea have provided her enough material to buzz off of, though much of it has been unfocused. At first listen, “BBD” seems more cohesive, and those who favor Ms. Banks will likely not be disappointed.

I also say (!) because of Azealia Banks’ recent comments, that she plans to drop two albums in 2013, and then retire from rap, according to HipHopDX, who quotes Banks as telling Hypetrak TV that she doesn’t plan to rhyme forever, finding it “tacky” and “unladylike.”

Attention whoring? Or does she simply have no real affinity to the music and culture which has provided her 13 or so minutes of fame? We’ll see how this works out for her.
