Fabolous drops the visual counterpart to “So NY,” his Just Blaze-produced hometown anthem that we featured on The Player as well as Episode 018 of The NY Hip Hop Report.
Interspersed with footage from a post-Hurricane Sandy Big Apple, the video for “So NY” is a stark, black and white reminder as to the devestation that washed over the region, particularly in hard hit areas of the five boroughs as well as Long Island and the Jersey Shore. It was a bit of an odd choice to use this kind of angle for the video to “So NY,” as of course, the song had nothing to do with the storm. Hate to view it as overly opportunistic, but the thought does come across.
That being said, it’s a decently shot and edited piece. Perhaps a parallel can be seen between the legendary resiliency of New Yorkers and the long grind of Fab’s career, still managing to stay afloat, no pun intended, in a Post-Mecca hip hop landscape.
Or perhaps we’re overthinking the thing too much. It’s a good track, feels good as a New Yorker, and reminds folks of Fabolous’ longevity and ability to still keep it gritty, even when known best for R&B-flavored tracks. It’s one of the reasons we once proclaimed Fabolous as one of the “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck.”
