Jean Grae, named one of our “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck,” blesses our eardrums with “Kill Screen,” a slow-rolling, lyrical and stylish gem from one of our favorite MCs, female or otherwise.
Despite the recent bump in attention being paid to rappers with vaginas, the industry still seems to get distracted by shiny, pretty objects. Sometimes (Nitty Scott, MC) the two can co-exist, sometimes (Azealia Banks) the jury is still out. Jean Grae, never much one for flash, has always delivered the goods lyrically, and her rugged-around-the-way-girl charm and vicious sense of humor, make her a favorite among many.
We’ve seen her rock stages with Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch. We’re pleased she received recent press in XXL. We’ve mentioned her in our frequent talks on The NY Hip Hop Report and are eagerly awaiting her next project. “Kill Screen” is a fantastic reminder of why.
“Kill Screen” is from Jean Grae’s upcoming Gotham Down album.
