What’s old is new again, as the saying goes, and a once-popular staple of youth activity for generations past has come back to life with a technological upgrade and a hip hop twist. Platinum League Trading Cards will feature photos and information about hip hop artists, classic and current, and will offer a tie-in to exclusive online content and an ongoing sweepstakes, according to Green Media, the Texas-based manufacturer.
Each pack is slated to contain five individual cards, each representing an artist from within the hip hop spectrum, as well as a ‘6th Card,” which will contain an access code to receive video messages directly from the artists themselves. So far, a wide range of artists has been hinted at through the Platinum League Facebook page, and includes veterans like E-40, Snoop Dogg and Scarface, as well as current artists like Gorilla Zoe, Maino and Lil Trill.
While the market for trading cards may not be what it once was, the addition of online content might work to spark interest in this series. Aside from access to additional content, cardholders will be able to enter in an ongoing sweepstakes, making them eligible for prizes such as apparel, ringtones, concert tickets and automobiles, according to Green Media.
The cards are slated to be sold at retail location such as Toys R Us, Wal-Mart and Target.
We are told that special consideration is being made for 2Pac and the Notorious B.I.G., who are both represented in the Platinum League Trading Cards series, with “exclusive behind the scenes content” from when the hip hop titans were alive.
