Nas – Daughters (Produced by No I.D.)

Nas - Daughters - from Life Is Good

Nas goes three for three in the lead up to his 10th studio album release after dropping “Daughters,” a deep, emotional tale told from the perspective of a worldly, rap superstar lamenting the error of being a father who might not have been as involved in his daughter’s life as he should have been. Cautionary and sounding a bit autobiographical, “Daughters” is introspective Nas rocking smoothly over a jazzy No I.D. track that gives folks the type of grown up rap music so many insist doesn’t exist in today’s time.

Nas rhymes of coming to several personal, parental realizations about his daughter, and how his legacy could negatively affect her. “While I’m on stage I can’t leave her defenseless / Plus she seen me switching women, pops was on some pimp shit / She heard stories of her daddy thugging / so if her husband is a gangster, can’t be mad, I love him / NEVER.”

Later, Nas speaks of thoughts after “at this point I realize / I ain’t the strictest parent / I’m too loose / I’m too cool with her,” later warning, “they grow fast / one day shes you little princess / next day she’s talking boy business, what is this / They say the coolest players and foulest heartbreakers in the world/ God gets us back he makes us have precious little girls.”

“Daughters” follows acclaimed songs “Nasty” and “The Don,” heightening the already high expectations for Nas’ Life Is Good, slated for a July 17 release. A video for “The Don” is expected shortly.
