It’s a long title, but there’s a lot going on here, and it’s worth the extra words! Long-time readers will recall us bestowing our coveted “5 Reasons Why New York Hip Hop Doesn’t Suck” honor to TruStatement Entertainment and iLLspokinN’s “Props To Hip Hop“ performance series, but for those uninitiated, let me explain the greatness of this event.
It’s basically this: Roughly two dozen underground and indie MCs, most from the New York City area, backed by an incredibly talented live band, perform covers of classic hip hop delivering a one-of-a-kind show, with a fun and high-energy atmosphere. This well orchestrated concept has manifested itself in past events that highlighted groups and artists like A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, the Fugees and Snoop Dogg, with each episode growing in size, polish and attendance.
Props to Hip Hop returns with a new twist, as this confederation of artists will pay tribute to one of the most iconic concert tours in the history of hip hop, the 1987 “Together Forever” tour, featuring Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. The NY Times at the time stated, “The ‘Together Forever’ tour will be one of the few in pop music history to give top billing to black and white acts of equal stature,” and indeed, this hugely successful tour helped open the doors for all major rap tours to follow.
Hiro Ballroom will host the March 24, 2012 event, as these young performers pay homage to these iconic pioneers, celebrating these artists and this golden era of rap. In conjucntion with the performances, a true 1980s-styled flashback party will commence, so for those who long for the good ol’ hip hop days, you will be hard pressed to find a better way to spend a Saturday in 2012.
