Nas proclaims himself “The Don” in the latest from his upcoming album, dropped via Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97. By all early accounts, the song should add to already building expectation for his Life Is Good release.
“Heavy D gave this beat to Salaam for me to rap on,” Nas explains over a sputtering, snare drum-infested, boom-bap track, punctuated by a vocal loop from reggae icon Super Cat. The lyrics and delivery are aligned with the vintage Nas vibe delivered on “Nasty,” the previous leak from the impending project.
In “The Don,” Nas raps, “20 years in this game, looking 17.” For moments, the Queensbridge veteran is sounding like he’s still 17. As fans and followers will agree, for Nas, this is an extremely good thing.
The overall old school vibe is nostalgic, but not dated, while Nas spits with his trademark wordplay, charisma and confidence all intact.
For now, all we can get our hands on is a radio rip, but it’s definitely worth the listen.
